Scientific Methods in Biology
Scientific Methods in Biology is a research-intensive laboratory course requiring 5 hours in the lab per week. There are no formal lectures for this course though the professors in each unit will usually give a short talk at the beginning of class about lab techniques or biological principles. The course is a prerequisite for many biological and medical science modules. The course is divided into 4 units based on the professors responsible for a particular unit.
Quick Breakdown of Each Unit
D-Unit: microscopy, dilution techniques, and basic experiments in measuring chemical reaction rates
G-Unit: scientific annotations and learning how to write a scientific article
Z-Unit: conducting experiments with bacteria (e.g. transformation) and accessing library resources (small assignment)
K-Unit: group project on a topic of interest. Topics include exposing plants and bacteria to certain substances. You will be involved in designing an experiment, data collection and analysis, creating a scientific poster, and presenting your work to the class
