Geography 1400G: People, Places, and Landscapes
Background
Geography 1400G People, Places and Landscapes, 2011, Semester 2 Course
Review
Professor Dr. Arku. Very good and straight forward professor. Attending all the lectures is a must. The exams are based on the lecture slides. It barely consists of referring to the textbook (I did not have to refer to textbook at all).
Evaluations
The evaluations consist of Midterm 25%, 5 short essays for tutorials about 500-750 words each (each worth 5% = 25% total), attendance mark for attending the tutorials (15% easy marks, but participate in discussion during tutorials to get the marks), should be fairly easy to get all of the attendance marks. Finals 35% (non-cumulative, again refer to the lecture slides should get you a fairly high mark!).
Midterm 25% (Short answers and M/C)
Finals 35% (Short answers and M/C)
Attendance 15% (participate)
Essays (5) 25% (500-750 words each)
Advice
Only by attending lectures will you be able to completely finish the lectures slides and fill them in. The lectures slides are very helpful because all of the exam questions are right from the slides. You do not need to touch the textbook at all. The textbook is there if you didn't go to lecture and need help filling in slides. The textbook should also be used for getting knowledge on topics for tutorials. Textbook may also be needed to write your essays, as slides don’t cover the material that you need to refer to. Again, attend all classes to fill the lecture slides and you should be able to do very well on exams. Go to all tutorials and participate as attendance counts for those 15%. Also for essays, attend all tutorials as the TAs give you information on what must be done for the essays!
People who should take it - Anyone can take this if they are looking for a straight forward essay course. To fill your essay requirement, you may take Geography 1400G. No previous knowledge needed. The average for the course that the professor told the class was around 78%. The questions on the exams are not tricky as they are right from the slides. Most of the questions he asks are the fill in the blank parts of the lecture slides. The short answers for midterm and final are also very straight forward and they are pulled right out of the lecture slides. The short answers can range from a few words to a few lines. The short answers are directly from the slides.
Disclosure
My motivation for taking this course was to take a credit for an essay course that does not involve much writing and does not have a large amount of course work!
